As I thought about some more of what was in there (aside from the church thing) it made more and more sense.

Particularly in regards to Dharma and how Ben had been manipulated by smokey all along thinking it was Jacob. Remember that young Ben got shot by Sayid and was saved in a process where they said Ben would never be the same again afterward (much like Sayid). Also, Ben was able to summon smokey to kill Widmore's people.
