They aren't miracle workers at all. But they can and do help (even if the issues don't get resolved).

People go to therapists (particularly as couples) because they're stuck. They're not finding a way to resolution and improvement of their marriage. A therapist can help both sides understand each other better and possibly offer ideas on how to change the dynamic. They can't fix everything (or even anything) without both parties being fully invested and even then there may not be a resolution, but it's likely that if one party wants to go the relationship is doomed if they don't.
