Redmond, sorry about this late answer to your organic question, I was watching Crash play Red Dead Redemption and didn't see it--inside

Does the doctor want you on Organic or is that a personal choice?

It all started with milk and eggs. Crash loves deviled eggs, but everytime he ate them he'd get sick.

I mean, he was like OJ running through the crowded waiting room, just so he could get to the bathroom. It was so bad, I thought about putting police tape over the door. Then I started to get nauseated too. My doctir suggested organic eggs. The youks are bright yellow, they have no tingly taste, the eggs are huge and best of all, neither one of us gets sick eating them. Then we tried organic, grass fed, no growth hormone or antibiotic ultra-pastuerized milk. It has twice the shelf life of regular milk, When you taste it, it has a slightly sweet creamy taste (we drink 2%because we both have good cholesterals and can't stand weak ass 1% or skim milk)that is totally different from regular milk. You should do a taste test--we did one, blindfolded, and both of us picked the organic. Darcy did too and now she's drinking milk again. So we branched out and are using organic butter, sugar, meat, pantry stuff like crackers and pasta, bread, produce and juice. Even though Walmart has started carrying some organic stuff, we mostly grocery shop at Albertsons because of the varity and because we know what we're getting when we buy their Natural Harvest brand.

The other thing we've been doing is avoiding stuff with high fructose corn syrup in it. Back in the late 60s, sugar became a bad word. It was blamed for everything from zits to poorly behaved children. Since its name was "cleared" some product lines are starting to use it again. One of the biggies is Jones Sodas. They've gone all sugar and funnily enough has less calories than a Coke with hfcs. Almost all of the Nature's Harvest stuff is made with real sugar now. You can really tell in the baked goods. Crash swoons over their chocolate chip cookies. HFCS has been linked to allergies, the higher incidence of Asthma, and adult onset diabetes (Type II). The amount of people with Diabetes II remained steady for years. Then about 5 years after HFCS was switched for sugar, the number of cases skyrocketed. The FDA is doing a study now to determine if the rise was a true correlation or just coincidental.

And to finally answer your question, Mark and I are both foodies. I've always been a good cook and he's getting into "scratch" cooking, using Cookbooks by Julia Child, Anthony Bourdain, James Beard, Andre Keller, etc. Right now he's into Tom Collichio's (host of Top Chef) learn to cook book. It's mostly about meat and all the different was to cook it. As a result, we're eating about 1/3 the fast food we did a year ago, we have fun planning menus and trying stuff, and just having fun in the kitchen, plus we're both dropping pounds without any effort. You can't go wrong with using the freshest ingredients,in season, and prepared simply.

Once you get in the habit of cooking like this it's a habit. As for both our doctors, they're thrilled and wish other patients would do it. Sorry for such a rambly answer to a short question, but I've really gotten passionate about good food. I've had 2 small strokes in 2 weeks and was primed for a big one. I didn't want to leave this earth knowing the last thing I ate was a Big Mac.
