Rose was almost assuredly not the better player, but as a hitter, he was likely Ichiro's equal, if not better.

In his peak, Rose had some legitimately great seasons. Ichiro is close to his hitting equal, imo, but his fielding and baserunning put him above Rose as a complete player.
