Is there a difference between a cast iron skillet, fry pan or grill pan? Will they all pretty much do the same thing?

Just realized after seeing one of the Amazon ads here that I don't own a cast iron skillet, and would like to, so I am going to add one to my registry. Is there a difference between the items I listed, or is it pretty much "six of one, half dozen of the other"?

Fry pan - raised sides, skillet flatter and sometimes square, grill pan - ridges in the bottom to create grill marks and keep meat out of the fat. -- nm

I will say this. I threw out all my pots and pans with that no stick surface. That stuff is showing up in people's bloodstream.

all 3 have many crosover uses. but if you going to buy only 1 of the 3, get the cast iron skillet -- nm

I would expect a cast iron skillet to be the same as a cast iron fry pan, but I would expect a grill pan to have raised lines on the surface for grilling. -- (link)

I'm not sure of the answer to your question, but I highly recommend a cast iron dutch oven at some point.
