Most of the time, the thing you're scanning the item over is also the produce scale.

So you can just put your item on that area, hit "look up item" or "punch in PLU" if there is a sticker on the produce with the 3 or 4 digit produce #, and then go from there. If it's an item of produce that doesn't require weighing (cantaloupe, watermelon, etc.) it'll just prompt you to put in the total number you have.
