I didn't like him at first but found him okay by the end. I wish he hadn't forced the quips so much, though. -- nm

I always considered that his background is as a newspaper food critic, so his quips always seemed like they played better in that format than on TV. -- nm

I think that's probably true. On tv, it feels awkward more often than not. Meanwhile, Ripert's knowledge makes him a genius addition.
