I hadn't thought about some sort of reader assistance guide. I've always been anti-Cliff-Notes because they seem like the lazy-student's version, but maybe something of the short would not be a bad idea here
Though we have Callisto's sister.
Responses:
I was anti-them, knowing how most students use them. But I also know I may miss something here or there (esp not having read the Odyssey, for example)

i don't do cliff's notes but for something like Ulysses, i would definitely get an annotated version if possible (i love my Oxford Shakespeare) -- nm

This was my thought, though this post makes a seemingly coherent argument that a lot of annotations is a good way to get bogged down and bored with it
