Apple is free to do what they want. The publisher needn't meet their request, and I needn't do business with Apple because they made the request.

The only issue here that concerns me is that right now Apple has a near monopoly that allows them to successfully make those demands. Competitors will be along soon enough to render them less powerful.
And because they choose to act as Nanny, I choose to limit my business with them to as little as possible.
I'll avoid them completely once there is a music management software better than iTunes.
