Actually, his only mistake is that he didn't win the hand.

he was getting odds to make the call for the straight draw with 2 cards to come.
You're 2.1 to 1 to make the hand with 2 to come; you're about 5.7 to 1 to make the hand with 1 to come.
He was getting the right odds to make the call and/or force the action. He just didn't get there.
