He's usually pretty good at knowing what to re-do and what to leave alone. I've seen him tell people that they've ruined items by cleaning them, it's surprising to see him do something that appears to be so wrong.
The second I'm not surprised to read about. I can see them wanting to put something nicer on camera if the one brought in didn't look as nice. It doesn't make it right but I'm not surprised.
