First, the good: it's a beautiful movie. The reviewer that suggested that Shyamalan: The Director should fire Shyamalan: The Writer is pretty accurate. Everything about the look, pacing, cinematography, effects, music...fantastic. Loved it!!
Also, it pretty much followed the show. The first book is 20 episodes, so around 9-10 hours, that had to be cut down to the film length. I think he did a good job picking and choosing what to keep and what to dump. I think the casting was fairly good. The boy playing Aang is a wonderful martial artist and I really liked Dev Patel as the Prince and Shaun Toub as Uncle Iroh was great.
For the bad: he changed the pronunciation of at least 3 names (Aang, Sokka and Uncle Iroh) That totally pissed off my kids. Also, Sokka was an ok casting choice, but the character was written all wrong. It was hard to tell whether the dialogue made the acting suck or the acting made the dialogue suck. Could have been a bit of both. I REALLY hope they give Book 2: Earth a shot, because I think there's some real potential for this to be great.
The studio needs to greenlight the sequel, under the condition that THEY pick the writer and Shyamalan directs. They can turn this around, but I'm afraid they won't get the chance.
Overall, I liked the movie a lot. Cameron also liked it. Jamie (who's become a bit obsessed with the show in recent months) said, "Dad, we should have seen The Karate Kid instead."
