It's hard for the GOP to gain the upper hand in any debate when they keep putting their foot in their mouth.

In this highly political environment, every word is dissected and any misstep is thrown back at you. Like the Boehner "ant" comment. I doubt it means what the Democrats want you to think ti means, but it kills a couple of news cycles having to go out there and constantly be on the defensive.
It took the Democrats a long time to catch up to Karl Rove's world, but now that they have, the GOP is sorely missing Rove's guidance.
