LIR: I misspoke. I shouldn't have said "equivalent". There are parallels between those plays.

Yeah, I got that. I agree that sycor's goaltending analogy is the best one. The points count in that scenario. -- nm

That's a direct analogy of what we think the rule *should* be, but as the rule is now, my analogy is the accurate one.

Goaltending was created because it was done intentionally. A defensive player could be placed under the basket to just swat at the balls coming down.

Again: I agree that is what the rule *should* be like. But as it is *now*, the parallel act in basketball *IS* a foul to prevent a dunk. (nm)

Just to be clear, in basketball circles, that's known as a "super-lame play", right? -- nm

I guess it's a bit different because there's no goalie, but a hard foul at the end of a bball game like that sounds like a super-lame play to me.

There are intentional fouls and just plain old hard fouls. An intentional one will get you a free throw and the ball back.

Everyone has moved on from the atrocity of your analogy but you. We're focusing on the failings of soccer instead.

Really pmb? I'm not, and I've said so numerous times. I've just made an analogy, and explained why it's apt.
