There are intentional fouls and just plain old hard fouls. An intentional one will get you a free throw and the ball back.

Yeah, it can be a bit of dick move but no one on your team would blame you for doing everything you could to stop the ball from going in the basket.
I'd kick the guy in the nuts if meant he didn't score and we didn't get eliminated from the playoffs.
I believe you do what you have to do to make sure your team wins. Rules schmools.
