If a batter swings and misses at strike three but the ball hits him, the batter is out and the ball is dead, right?

This happened last inning in the Yankee game. Granderson was on first and went to second after the ball hit Gardner and got away from the catcher. Gardner was called out on strikes and my understanding of the rules is that once Gardner touches the ball, or it touches him, the ball is dead.
Granderson should have been sent back to first and not been allowed to advance since it should be a dead ball, correct?
The ump let Granderson stay at first and he scored on a base hit by the next batter. I'm happy with the outcome but I'd rather see that the umps know the rules of the game.
