Audiences wanted to go to theaters to laugh.
If you look at some of the recent summer films that have disappointed, none of them showed any whimsy in the trailers. Prince of Persia in particular qualifies under that umbrella. Movies are intended to be escapist fun for the most part. Nolan made everyone want to prove they were grim, and the problem is that most of them aren't even within shouting distance of Nolan's talent. So, they can't pull it off.
