in that 18 months you could have had a much sexier modem for the same price or less than the original. even charging yourself reasonable interest on the new purchase yields a far lower price than would continuing to rent and having the unit crap out on you again in another 18 months (which would be an anomaly).
also, one could mitigate the failure rate with an extended "warranty" from a big box shop guaranteeing 24 months of use. would the unit die, you would be reimbursed its purchase price to purchase a new unit.
but I don't think normal people think like this.
