commercials are usually made by people other than the makers of the movie ... sometimes they mess it up something fierce.

In the case of Inception, I think the commercials are just to intrigue you and make you ask yourself what the hell is going on - with the obvious intention of getting you to convince yourself to go see it, to answer the question.
