I think this depends on how you intend to build the dog's relationship with the human. Will there be multiple people? If it's smell-centric use scents

Things like "musk", "rut", "exertion", "filth", "lake mud"
"Lake Mud visited today. Was with Rut."
"Oak gave me food."
"Saw Fresh Rain with Musk walking together by the running water."
That kind of thing.
