I go for a mix. I normally look things up on-line on the catalog first.

I put holds (reserves) on things that aren't currently availability, or things that have to be sent from other branches.
Lately, most of my books have been arriving this way, so I just go to the hold shelf, pick them up, and go to the check-out desk.
This is efficient, but not a very discover-ful way to use the library.
