to stop Michaels from building the team he did. He was a great owner in that he was willing to spend or do whatever it took to win championships. But he was a poor judge of baseball talent and made many mistakes that cost the Yankees quality talent and wins. He's the reason the Yanks couldn't win the 80's with Ricky, Mattingly, Winfield, etc... He misjudged talent and took the name player over the skilled player too often. He needed headlines too often.
With that said I think something changed when he got back and he was more willing to listen to other people about the player decisions and he learned to trust his staff more. The Yankees still made odd trades that I think were more Steinbrenner than Cashman but for the most part things were much better after he came back.
