First there was Candid Camera, which just shot voyeur and prank video on random strangers.
Then there was The Real World, which filmed strangers living and interacting together but free to roam independently.
Then there was The Real World with the intent for the group to act as a whole in some business capacity.
Then there was Survivor, which filmed strangers living and interacting together with the goal of winning a prize.
Then there was MTV's wrestling reality show, which filmed strangers living and interacting together with the goal of winning a work contract.
Then there was American Idol, which showed individuals competing for a contract at the mercy of public viewing voting.
Big Brother, Amazing Race, and The Apprentice all followed.
