Seems like everything that is big business, including music, movies and big-time politics. You find raw talent, or a concept that catches on, and then

you get someone with know-how and cunning to orchestrate and direct the product from there on. So that also includes punk rock bands, Presidential candidates, etc etc.

The more MTV invested in this, and had their overall results depend on this franchise, the less they dared risk authenticity.
