There are bacteria that eat oil, I'm sure they're having a heyday in the gulf.

I've heard that when they eat it, they emit CO2, which creates roaming dead zones in the ocean.
It's like ... if AT&T showed up at your house and choked you to death. :)
Point being ... it seems to be a statement of fact that the ecosystem of Earth finds a way to balance itself. However, the process of establishing that balance is a long one, and the interim effects are really really shitty.
