I think there may have been a slight continuity error that might be explained away by appropriate dialog. I need to see it again to tell.

But they set up the kick with the sedative as sleepers reacting to abrupt inner-ear movements. So why didn't the van rolling down the embankment trigger them to wake.

I don't remember dialog saying that only a specific kick would trigger them to awake, but it is obvious that it couldn't be just a slap, but must be something stronger.

I'm just not sure why the tumbling of the van wasn't enough to pull them back to the van level of Robert's subconscious.
