Cable modems speak a certain language called "DOCSIS". About 18 months ago, cable companies started upgrading to DOCSIS 3.0.

Turns out, though, that most cable modems don't talk DOCSIS 3.0 so if you're paying for anything more than the lowest package from the cable provider, chances are you're paying for a high speed connection and not maximizing the speed, unless you have a really recent modem, and that's unlikely.
