but it's very clear, from the different looks and settings of the different dream levels, which one is which.
every time he spins the stupid top in the "real" world (or top level, if you assume it's all a dream) it falls down. he even finally sees his kids faces, explicitly showing us that they are not the projections that we have seen in every other dream level that they've shown up. other than the overarching idea that no world might ever be real, there's no evidence -- until he throws in the spinning top that doesn't stop spinning -- that the top level is anything but the real world
