I read your character response. I also thought the supporting characters were wooden, and I've never been a big DiCaprio fan. But I thought he was ok in this, and while I didn't feel emotionally connected, I understood his motivations after being in a 'dream world' for 50+ years.
I just think there's so many levels to this movie that giving the characters a C-grade and giving the visuals, story, sound, editing, special effects, and everything else an A would move the film into B-level territory at the very least.
(To me, C means 'don't think it was worth the $5 but didn't hate it.')
