but then on the other hand, she's obviously trying to mend things, so this might be the perfect opportunity to do that. (not really interested in a relationship with my brother, but she was always nice to me, I liked her, so I wouldn't mind mending things with her - and getting to know my niece who I have only met once)

That makes it tricky. This may be indelicate but, is she a good hair stylist? I mean, if she isn't, that makes the decision easier.
