i honestly don't see these polls as all too useful. all they tend to indicate is that people feel antipathy towards institutions they continue....

to use and support. americans don't believe in congress but incumbents tend to still do ok. they don't believe in banks, but they keep their money there and take out mortgages with them. they don't believe in public schools, but continue to send their kids there. 19% of people say they have no confidence in big business, but if you look at corporate gross revenues, it's clear that they overwhelmingly continue to spend money on their goods and services.

other than showing that the trend towards *saying* you have no confidence in these institutions is coming down thru time, i'm not sure there's all that much here. what people do about it over time hasn't changed all that much, i don't think.
