I think it's possible to have character growth and still retain the humor.

To use Chuck as a comparison again.

Chuck and Sarah are a couple after 2.5 seasons. The show is still funny.

Shawn and Jules are *still* pretending not to have feelings for each other. And when they do address that, the whole show gets awkward in an unfunny way. They need to stop the dance and commit.

Some plot points need to be addressed and resolved and the will they or won't they of the Shawn/Jules relationship is one of them.
