Many characters are established people .....

you join them in process of their journey, House as a doctor, Dr Cox as a doctor, Lenny Briscoe as a cop, etc etc etc...

it's when you have characters that are starting their journey into whatever they are that there's changes. Shawn here becoming a law enforcement person, JD in Scrubs becoming a doctor and confronting what his job really was.

There should be growth in those characters as they grow into what they're going to be.
