JD and Turk's outlook on what they did did change. They saw good people die. They saw people decide to let themselves die.
Take the kid on Southland...where he's learning to be a cop, when he's learning real shit happens. Unquestionably the kid will grow over the years.
Shawn's not growing hardly at all. It's impossible to take the show forward with anything approaching tension if that tension doesn't result in a change, even minor, in the characters.
