I have a poll: Do you think you're more careful with other people's property, or your own? Say if you borrowed or rented a car.

I watched a documentary called Love the Beast a couple weeks ago, about Eric Bana's long relationship with his Ford Falcon. He rebuilt it twice over the years to race it, then had a professional mechanic rebuild for a big race, in which is crashed and basically totalled the car.
In the documentary, Bana interviews Jay Leno, and Leno says, "You know why you crashed it? Because it wasn't your car. It was your car when you rebuilt it, but when you can someone else rebuild it, it was now *his* car you were driving. If it had been your car, you wouldn't have crashed it."
I think the reverse. I think I'm more careful with other people's property.

I bet Leno thinks every car he owns is "his" and I also bet he restored maybe 1/10 of them with his own hands. -- nm

I don't think cars are a typical kind of property, especially for people like Leno/people who love speed -- nm

I'm not careless with my own, but I'm certainly extra diligent about other's stuff -- nm

I'm with you. I treat other's stuff more carefully. Though I also agree with Leno.
