There's a lot to see and do in the area, and you're only about 100 miles from the L.A. area.

I'd certainly recommend it for a vacation, and plan to spend just a few hours at the con.
Should be easier to find a hotel further up the coast and you can drive or take the train in either direction - San Diego or L.A.
