Just saw Inception - can someone please explain something to me? (spoils)

We see that Cobb needed to get Saito in the 4th (?) layer - instead we just see Saito awake in the plane after everyone has been "kicked" awake. Are we supposed to assume that Cobb found him in the 4th layer after (I'm guessing) leaving his wife, or was it possible for the kicks to wake him up even if he was not 'rescued' or whatever from that last layer (or was it limbo that he would have been in)?
