Bartlett wanted to be a priest but fell in love and studied economics instead.

Bartlett has MS and has hidden that condition until this point but the secret is unfolding.

Bartlett's long time personal secretary was killed in a car crash the episode prior.

That is basically the set up plot wise for what you see in this hour.
