An upgrade is not likely necessary. A couple of things to consider...

1 - You may already have a DOCSIS 3.0 compatible modem. In that case, your cable company has taken care to upgrade it thought a packet push.
2 - The theoretical maximum throughput of DOCSIS 2.0 is in the 42 Mbit/s (downstream) range, so if you're only on an 8 Mbit/s package, you should be fine. This is in spite Comcast recommending a hardware upgrade for anyone using 30 Mbit/s package or higher.
3 - Test your speed at Speedtest.net. If you get anything near your 8Mbit/s rate (and Sunday morning is probably a good time to test), then you're good.
