Calling the computer knowitalls around... my backup 1TB drive seems to be dead...

It crashes Windows Explorer when I plug it in, and can't access the filesystem (I see the root directory but I can't click on a file or a directory without crashing). I have tried in 3 different computers. Actually the whole computer seems to almost crash unless I plug it off.

However, this same drive can be used to play media files on a TV and it still works perfectly on that regard, and I can explore the filesystem using the TV interface.

Any idea? Can't really lose some of the stuff in there.

Couple things: First, can you run chkdsk on it without crashing? If not, download a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD and see if you can run it there -- (link) - oblique Aug 2, 07:01 2

  - It's kinda a swiss army knife of tools. I think you want to boot to the Avira NTFS4DOS boot disk under NTFS tools. Should have a chkdsk inside it -- nm - oblique Aug 2, 07:26
