It's really not so much about helping the guy with the actual ball as it is stopping the guys with the fake balls.

MLB realized last decade that they had a very real counterfeit memorabilia problem. Those counterfeit items devalue the historical value of the actual pieces of baseball history. It's not just these home run balls they're authenticating, after every single game something like 100 different items are authenticated. In the past 10 years over 3 million items have been authenticated.
