I told them to just say that there was a paperwork snafu (one was recently divorced when they got together) adn that it was easier to just marry (again) than to deal with petitioning the court and having lawyers file papers. (in CA you can ask the court to recognize a couple as married and order the court clerk to prepare a delayed certificate of marriage, handy for those occasions where a couple has not prepurchased a license)
