I've read that in America the light comes on very early, long before you're close to running out.

On Top Gear they ran on empty for many miles. They went further than the car company said they could go. To make things better, Jeremy Clarkson didn't even conserve gas at first. He was trying to run out near his house and just go home. He had the a/c on, was driving 80mph and was even heating the passenger seat for no other reason than to waste gas.
