I was wondering about how that would work going forward.

You're not tied to the "one book, one person" anymore. If a library purchases Dan Brown's latest book, and 100 people want to read it on their Kindle, do they have to wait, or can the library check it out to 100 people at once.

I'm sure publishers would get quite upset about that.
