Working - as I do - in distance learning at a university, I know a little something about this.

Firstly, it doesn't matter how much past content you archive, there will always be new content. Certainly, there are benefits to distance learning (smaller classrooms, large student bodies), but there's still certification, accreditation and testing. A lot of this can be automated, but that doesn't mean we'll see the end of campuses any time soon. Most important of all, the motivation of a student needs to be there.
We saw in that GAO report on FPE that dropout rates for these pretty much virtual schools are astronomical. You're not going to get a degree from MIT if you watch a couple of classes online and then quit.
