The movie only has a token resemblance to the book. In the book Alex isn't married, but she's also not the "love of his life" either. They only meet twice and the second meeting doesn't end well. The twist in the book is that Alex is someone that he fired in the past that he doesn't remember.
Also, the plot about the company changing to an online chat termination method instead of sending people out? Not in the book. In fact, Anna Kendrick's character doesn't exist in the book at all.
