znu is... right. Deep down in landfills there's no air, and organic material decomposes anaerobically

this produces a lot nastier stuff relatively (more methane and other assorted stuff) as opposed to CO2 from normal decomposition. (your compost pile is a different story in terms of size, though aeration helps) This is why landfills sort out organics whenever possible.
