for the heck of it, I sent them a note asking if there's anything I can do, because of the special circumstances. they sent back a form letter (I'll pursue again separately) that likely could apply to you, too:

However, for a limited time, members can reactivate expired miles.

Through this special opportunity, you can extend the life of expired miles and quickly boost your available mileage balance.

* Miles that expired on or after December 31, 2002 are eligible
* There is no limit to the number of expired miles you can reactivate; you can reactivate some or all of your expired balance
* The price to reactivate miles is $50 (plus a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax) for every 5,000 miles, and a $30 per transaction processing charge
* This offer is available through December 31, 2010

Doesn't strike me as a very good deal. If it's 25000 miles for a round trip ticket, you'd basically need to pay $280 to reactivate 25000 miles. - pmb Aug 9, 09:41 4
