jax., AA does have a way to get back your miles right now... for a price.

for the heck of it, I sent them a note asking if there's anything I can do, because of the special circumstances. they sent back a form letter (I'll pursue again separately) that likely could apply to you, too:

Through this special opportunity, you can extend the life of expired miles and quickly boost your available mileage balance.

* Miles that expired on or after December 31, 2002 are eligible
* There is no limit to the number of expired miles you can reactivate; you can reactivate some or all of your expired balance
* The price to reactivate miles is $50 (plus a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax) for every 5,000 miles, and a $30 per transaction processing charge
* This offer is available through December 31, 2010
