I'm not even sure if the Mac helps in that I can pull the files off the external drive and put them on the Mac but then I cannot transfer them back to other external drives.

Are these files you can actually open or read on the Mac. It sounds like even though the Mac is "copying files" they're not really being copied or - oblique Aug 9, 13:04 2
