In response to "Every now and then I run across a book that seems inexplicably popular. Have you ever heard of this, or of Barbara Payton? -- (link)" by mara

no but it sounds interesting...I looked her up on IMDB and the biography writer inadvertantly cracked me up

She reached her peak with routine but promising co-star work opposite James Cagney in Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye (1950), Gary Cooper in Dallas (1950) and Gregory Peck in Only the Valiant (1951). .................. During that time Barbara's career had plummeted to the point where she was making such dismal features as Bride of the Gorilla (1951)."

According to the writer of this biography her peak and valley were the same year.
